"Minnie" May Hopkins
From OtakuWiki
"Minnie" May Hopkins is a character in the manga and anime Gunsmith Cats. Her Japanese seiyou (voice actor) is Kae Araki, and her English voice is Kimberley Yates.
A "bomb specialist," as she refers to herself, "Minnie" May Hopkins learned the trade from her boyfriend, Ken Takizawa. While only being 18, she is considerably more mature than the average 18-year old girl. She ran away from home at 13 for undisclosed reasons (and she is loath to reveal said reasons) and was found and cared for by Kenny. When Kenny had to go underground for several years, she worked as a prostitute at a brothel in Chinatown - even advancing into teaching other newcomers - before leaving and joining up with Rally to run the gun shop.
When action is called for, May carries a wide range of explosive weapons with her. She typically uses a self-modified grenade called a "May Special", an impact-only grenade with no shrapnel. However, she is not averse to using high-explosive grenades when necessary.
Perhaps even more impressive is her talent for disguises and acting, particularly considering that she has no formal training as an actress. During the stories in the manga, she performs some impressive feats of acting and disguise, such as:
- fooling Ken that she is a boy and maintaining that charade for months, at times blushing on command:
- imitating the police chief's voice on the phone so well, she even fools one of his officers:
- weeping on command:
- and imitating a child star so well she even fools an entire film crew.
May is tiny and young-appearing for her age, having taken growth-stunting herbal drugs in an effort to stay attractive to her possibly pedophiliac boyfriend Ken. She can pass for a child of ten or twelve and often takes advantage of this. She is very cute - "like Minnie Mouse", hence her nickname - with blonde hair and blue-green eyes.
She is generally cheerful and possesses a great "joi de vivre". She does have a temper though, particularly if someone comes down hard on her lover and mentor Ken. If you do that, even with the best of intentions, you can expect well-aimed, hard words... or hard objects to come flying in your direction. She often has many arguments with her friend and partner Rally Vincent, particularly about Rally's preferences of guns and muscle cars over men.
