Synopsis

Private Takuya Isrugi was initially enthusiastic about his assignment as maintainence mechanic to the 801 Tactical Training Squadron, stationed at Irumi Air Base. But his first day at base... didn't go exactly well. First of all, the base commander mispronounced his name. Then he found out the squadron's barracks was a rusty shed at the very back of the base.

But the biggest surprise was running into the two main pilots of the squadron – women - in fact, all the pilots in the squadron were women! And THAT meeting wasn't exactly friendly (he accidentally saw the girls naked - they were either preparing for or in the middle of a bath - while running from the squadron's mascot – the bat Chi-chan – and got beat-up for it).

Isrugi soon found out the history of the squadron. It was mainly a dumping ground for what the Japan Air Self Defense Force (who given the producers of this anime its support and technical advice) deems as 'trouble cases'. The dusky-skinned Arisa Mitaka can be a hard-case and a bit manipulative but is a well-meaning girl and the squadron's top pilot. And the reason the equally-skilled but kind-hearted Miyuki Haneda was in – she had slapped a superior officer who she had a crush on – a chauvinistic colonel who told her that a woman couldn't possibly become a combat pilot - a colonel who currently holds the future of the 801 T.T.S. in his hands.

The other ladies of the squadron are equally strange. The oldest of the group, Sakuya Saginomiya, happens to be a genius when it comes to gambling (she seems to always win). And the worst pilot of the group (and keeper of Chi-chan), Yoko Shimorenjaku, is a junk-food junkie!

To make matters worse, Haneda and Mitaka find themselves competing for Isrugi's affections. Somehow, Isrugi has got to get these girls to co-operate and fly as one... otherwise the squadron is libel to be disbanded!

And even after they survive - the Airbats face other challenges - when the first female captain of the United States Air Force Thunderbirds openly challenges Arisa as a pilot! Talk about international incidents!
