Synopsis

In a post-apocalyptic future, the majority of Earth's surface is devastated by a massive non-nuclear war. All the world's major cities now lie in crumbling ruins, with the survivors still fighting.

One of those still fighting in this harsh reality is a young woman named Deunan Knute, a natural athlete with gymnastic survival skills and a master of weaponry. When her unit is destroyed by a band of rogue mercenaries, Deunan was almost a casualty herself... until a group of soldiers from the city of Olympus, known as ES.W.A.T. (Extra Special Weapons And Tactics), rescues her.

Although at first reluctant, Deunan soon finds that the war she had fought for so long had ended the previous year. She is also alarmed to find that her former lover Briareos, who had been rescued a year before, is now a cyborg, over three-quarters of his body now artificial.

At first, she is pleasantly surprised at the virtual peace the citizens of Olympus are, but then is surprised that 60% of the population were Bioroids – genetically-enhanced humans initially created by her mother, Dr. Gilliam Knute, which included genetic material from her father Carl Knute. But soon she'll discover that paradise has its ugly side as well – and the city's military leader - General Edward Uranus III - is planning a coup against the Bioroid administration, the first strike being the destruction of the Bioroid's regeneration center – and that the survival of the Bioroid race, which included her new friend Hitomi, relies on her finding out the secret of 'Appleseed'.

This film, produced by Shinji Aramaki and based on the manga by Masamune Shirow, is a completely CGI-generated movie, and was groundbreaking in 2004 for the use of cel-shaded 3-dimensional models of the characters. The sequel of the film, titled Appleseed: EX Machina, was released in the U.S. in March of 2008, with Acadamy Award-winning director John Woo as the film's director.
