Synopsis

In the time before the rise of the Edo Shogunate, when rival samurai and ninja clans fought against each other for control of Japan, a young ninja named Hikagi is on a quest – to find and kill the one person that he once called 'friend'. A year before, while under retainer with the Takada clan, his friend, Maoru, had tried to kill him using a poisoned shiriken (ninja throwing star). He survived the poison, but he now wears the scar from the attack under his right eye.

This time, the Takada have sent Hikagi on another quest: the previous master of the clan, along with his son, had met their end at the hands of Yoma – demons from hell. Hikagi's job, to silence Marou before he spreads the news of their deaths to the world. However, during his quest, Hikagi discovers a horrifying secret about his friend – he is a yoma himself, the head of the Terrestrial Yoma named Kukaki no Miko.

During Hikagi's quest, he encounters many things – two of them are women, one a beautiful but disfigured citizen of a village populated by people who committed suicide - only to be reborn and now act only as food for the Yoma, and two years later a feisty young ninja framed for the death of her leader – and both women were named Aya! Also, events around both Hikagi and the second Aya are drawing to a head, namely the victory of Nobunaga Oda and the founding of the Edo Shogunate, a betrayal by the losing Takada clan upon the bidding of the Yoma – and Hikagi's fateful final battle with Maoru!
