Synopsis

A medieval world is threatened by Youma, cannibalistic demons which are capable of assuming the form of their previous victims in order to hide among humans until their next attack, devouring their victims entrails in the process. Because of the danger these hideous demonic creatures face, the people are often forced to hire a special warrior known as a Claymore to hunt them.

Claymores, named for the swords they carry, are almost exclusively women who have been altered by infusing them with the blood and flesh of Yomuas, giving them power that surpasses that of their prey. However, because they have the blood of Youmas within them, Claymores – often called "silver-eyed witches" for their eye color – are often shunned and mistrusted by the populace, and often live lonely lives. And there is still the danger that, if they use too much of their powers, a Claymore will "awaken" - that is, become a demon even more powerful than the Youma, but with the Claymore's mind and memories.

Hiring a Claymore can be risky. The mysterious organization they represent often places huge fees for their services; the Claymores do not set the fees. If whoever hires the Claymore does not pay the fee, then that community often faces retribution... mostly in the form of a Youma attack.

Clare is Claymore # 47, generally the weakest of the 47 Claymores that patrol this world. Unlike the others, she is the only Claymore to willingly undergo the process of change, her blood infused with the Claymore Teresa, a.k.a. "Teresa of the Faint Smile",who had saved her as a child, and was marked for death by the organization for killing a human while saving Clare. Now she wanders this world looking for Pricilla, the Awakened that had killed Teresa, as well as having to contend with a human boy, Raki, who is her only companion. This, and almost 'awakening' during a mission has branded Clare a rogue by the organization she works with, and as a result is given more and more dangerous assignments - in the hopes it would kill her. Somehow, Clare, and eleven other Claymores considered rogues, must not only survive them, but reassert theirselves as viable individuals!
