Synopsis

It began oddly enough. A young law student named Light Yagami had obtained a book dropped by a shinigami (death god) named Ryuk. In it, he discovers that, if he writes the name of a certain individual in it, that person dies. He then realizes that he could possibly change the world by eliminating those who would harm it.

So Light, going by the pseudonym "L", has begun his crusade, by writing down in the book those he feels deserving of death, and seeing the results of it, seen through Ryuk's point-of-view. However, Light's quest would be hampered by a detective named Matsuda Tota, who has become alarmed at the number of deaths of criminals. Now the two are engaged in a 'cat-and-mouse' duel, with the at-the-edge cop trying to bring L to justice. Will Tota succeed – or will he become part of Light's list?
