Geoblocks

The pyramid geosymbols of Disgaea 1 and 2 have been replaced by Geoblocks in Disgaea 3. Here are some points about Geoblocks:

  • Geoblocks are stackable
  • If geoblocks of like colors are adjacent, and one is destroyed, they cause a chain reaction destroying all adjacent blocks of the same color.
  • Throwing a geoblock adjacent to, or on top of, a geoblock of the same color will cause a chain reaction destroying all adjacent geoblocks.
  • As with Disgaea 1 and 2, Geoblocks sitting on a geopanel will give special effects to all geopanels of the same color.

How to Get Huge Geo Chains

I'm often asked how to use the Geo puzzle system in Disgaea in order to get the items in the bonus guage, so hopefully this write-up will help. Also note, this write-up only applies to Item World stages, because many of the story maps have unusual geoblock/geopanel setups that make it unusually hard to get large geo chains.

When a stage starts, the first thing I check is the Bonus List. If you don't see anything you want, don't even worry about the geoblocks/geopanels. If you do see something interesting, it's time to use geoblocks/geopanels.

Hitting Triangle will bring up your main menu, but you'll notice on the left there is a list of all Geopanel colors, as well as any effects on those panels. The number of geopanel colors is important because you cannot get a max combo unless you have as many or more geoblocks as you have geopanel colors.

As a simple example, let's say you start a map and it has Red, Green, and Blue geopanel colors; we have 3 geopanel colors.

Next choose the Character list from the main menu. At the end of this list you will see any Geoblocks the map contains. Hopefully you will have at least 3, but more is even better. If you do have 3, they will be Red, Green, and Null (Clear). There is always a Null geoblock, as long as the map has geoblocks at all. You should notice that the key missing geoblock is Blue. You have Blue geopanels, but no Blue geoblock.

Next step is to see what effects are on your Geoblocks. Mainly effects such as "No Lifting", "No Color Change" and "Invincibility" can prevent you from creating a large geo chain.

Assuming you do not have any preventative effects, the next step is to take the Red and Green geoblocks and place them on Blue geopanels. It doesn't matter which panels you place them on, so long as you can safely attack them from a blank spot on the map (you never want to leave your characters on a geopanel when you're about to perform a geo chain).

The next step might lose people, so pay attention. Whichever geoblock you are planning to destroy first (Red or Green), you need to move the Null geoblock onto a panel of that color. So if you plan the destroy the Red geoblock, then place the Null geoblock on a red panel.

Now destroy the Red geoblock (making sure none of your characters are standing on a geopanel because they'll take damage). A geo chain will start and all the Blue geopanels will turn red. In the process, the Green geoblock will be destroyed. Once all the blue geopanels have turned red, the Green geoblock will continue the Geochain by turning all Red geopanels into Green. During this part of the geo chain, the Null geoblock will be destroyed. Once the Green chain has finished, the Null geoblock will continue the chain and clear the entire map of Geopanels.

Depending on the size of the Geo chain, it can be quite easy to fill up the Bonus Guage to get at the items in the Bonus List. I've found that a geo chain around 1000 will get you a full Bonus Guage usually.
