About
Dominion Tank Police, along with its sequel New Dominion Tank Police, is possibly one of the most-popular of the adaptations of the artwork of Masamone Shirow, aside from Ghost in the Shell. The combination of Shirow's beautiful artwork of women, along with an action-packed plot, makes this one of the most sought-after of all anime series.
Synopsis
In an Earth in the future, a bacterial cloud encircles half the planet, forcing the citizens to resort to wearing breathing masks whenever they go out. In Newport City, conditions are similar – but crime is out-of-control. In fact, the situation has gotten so bad, the city elders have resorted to what may seem like utter lunacy... outfitting a special division of the police department with TANKS!
Unfortunately, many of the officers who man these tanks just happen to be the bottom-of-the-barrel - gun-happy lunatics who would rather shoot first and ask questions later! And it doesn't help much that a favorite pastime of the Tank Police is tormenting suspects into confessions. Because of these, many of the city's citizens feel the Tank Police is as much of a threat of the city - if not more - as the crooks!
Into this madhouse comes Leona Ozaki, a machine-crazy young woman who transfers from the Osaka Motorcycle Force to the Tank Police. Her lieutenant, Charles Britain (who has a lifetime subscription to 'How to Kill' Magazine'), isn't too happy to find that a girl had transferred into his tank battalion. And it didn't help Leona much when she wrecks Britain's prized tank in pursuit of a gang led by Buaku, a mutant/cyborg criminal misfit, and the Puma sisters Anna and Uni, two cat-girls who were former strippers.
Despite this setback – and getting reassigned by Britain to Child Protective Services in retaliation for wrecking his tank – Leona, along with new-found friend Al, decides to press ahead with her plan to become a full-fledged member of the Tank Police. To do this, she and Al end up using the wreckage of Britain's tank to construct Bonaparte – a small but fast and highly maneuverable tank that can stand up even to machines bigger than it.
Leona's trial-by-fire, which secures her place in the Tank Police, soon happens and involves confronting Buaku and the Puma sisters, who have targeted a special hospital for individuals who had not been infected by the bacteria-laden cloud but haven't died. The reason - a mysterious program known as 'Greenpeace', which predates the bacteria cloud. However, before any details are found, Buaku's employer ends up being killed by Leona - but Buaku and the Puma twins end-up escaping.
But later, a new mystery develops when Leona is taken hostage by Buaku when he steals a valuable painting - a painting of himself made long ago which may hold the key of removing the cloud from the Earth, as well as 'Greenpeace'... and with a mercenary force after the both of them, seeking the portrait! Can Leona's fellows in the Tank Police save her in the nick of time... without wrecking the city doing it?
