"Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one and only truth." - Alphonse Elric

Edward and Alphonse Elric had believed in these truths for so long. In their variation of Earth, the two brothers had worked to perfect their alchemy for a long time. But when their mother had died, Edward and Alphonse both dared to dabble in the forbidden art of human alchemy to attempt to gain her back... but at a horrific cost to both brothers!

Now Edward has lost two limbs, his right arm and right leg, and Alphonse - because his body was lost in the process - is forced to live his life in a suit of armor, all because Edward had forgotten to take into account the one rule of alchemy Edward couldn't account for, even in human alchemy – Equivalent Exchange! Edward's lost limbs had been replaced by ones of automail, maintained by their childhood friend Winry Rockbell, while Alphonse has to contend with his existence. As a result of Edward's mistake, the two must somehow find the legendary Philosopher's Stone, which could even overcome Equivalent Exchange. At the same time, Edward must deal with the challenges of being a state alchemist, having to compete with other state alchemists like Roy Mustang, who seeks to become the next führer.
