Synopsis

Orphaned at age 8, Tetsuro Hoshino wished greatly for a mechanical body, so that he could end the life of Count Mecha, the being responsible for his mother's death. When he stole a ticket for Galaxy Express 999, a starship fashioned in the form of an old steam locomotive, he had no idea about the adventure he was about to take.

After the theft, he was rescued by Maetel, a sad, beautiful woman dressed in black that resembled his mother. She had two tickets for the ship, and she wished Tetsuro to accompany her. During the trip to the machine planet, the young boy runs into various people along the way – namely the pirates for good - and Maetel's twin sister Emeraldas, as well as the legendary Captain Harlock, who aid the boy in his quest for revenge against Mecha.

But when the task was done, Tetsuro finds a greater cause - and seeks to end the life of the former "Thousand-Year Queen" Promethium, now a cold, emotionless mechanical being herself. But when he finds out Maetel's greatest secret, will Tetsuro help her?

This movie, created by legendary mangaka Leiji Matsumoto and directed by Rintaro (also the director of Metropolis), is the basis of other Matsumoto greats like Queen Emeraldas, Maetel Legend and Harlock Saga.
