Synopsis

This is director Mamoro Oshii's groundbreaking 1995 anime movie, based on the manga by Masamone Shirow, whose work is the basis for Appleseed, Appleseed: EX Machina, Black Magic M-66, Dominion Tank Police and New Dominion Tank Police.

Motoko Kusanage is an agent in Japan's Section 9, an anti-terrorist taskforce charged with combating crime in a world where virtual reality and actual reality collide. A full cyborg, she often finds conflict between the two, and often wonders about her own humanity (what she refers to as 'her ghost').

Lately, a series of crimes committed a mysterious hacker known as "The Puppet Master" has caused concern within the agency. And Kusanage has received strange messages over her wireless connection... possibly from the Puppet Master himself! Could she, along with her partner Batou, find the solution... before it's too late.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Ghost in the Shell S.A.C.: The 2nd Gig and Ghost in the Shell: Solid State Society, as well as the movie's sequel Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, follow the same story line.

Note about the manga: The previous release of the manga version of Ghost in the Shell in the U.S. had altered a scene in the book, which featured Motoko Kusanage participating in a very graphic virtual-reality lesbian fantasy. When the book was re-released in 2006, those deleted pages were restored. It should be warned that this particular scene is NOT intended for young readers!
