It is 2030. The boundaries between virtual reality and actual reality have become blurred, many people choosing cybernetic implants – or becoming cyborgs themselves – either because of mortality concerns or quality-of-life matters. Only people who have religious matters reject cybernetics.

But someone like Major Motoko Kusanage have no say in the matter. A bisexual, Kusanage had only became a full cyborg only because of a childhood illness. She is haunted by a reoccurring nightmare – of her crushing a doll because of she couldn't control her cybernetic body at first.

Now she is a member of Section 9, her friend and partner is another full cyborg, Batou. The group is in charge of solving cybernetic crimes that threaten Japan, but is currently investigating a special matter – crimes involving a super-hacker known as The Laughing Man. Although they soon solve the crime, they soon uncover evidence about the Japanese government's dirty work, which may endanger Section 9's work - and the team's lives!

This is based on the artwork of Masamune Shirow, which includes, Appleseed, Appleseed: EX Machina, Dominion Tank Police, New Dominion Tank Police, Black Magic M-66, and the original Ghost in the Shell.
