Synopsis

The whole thing started during the Shinshinkai All-Japan Tournament at Tokyo's celebrated Buddahkhan Stadium. Although it was sponsored by the Shinshinkai School, it was an open tournament, meaning all sorts of karate fighters were welcome to compete. Out of nowhere, a young man – Baki Hamna – appeared as a contestant. While only a white belt, the young man – whose body was covered with scars – proceeded to send the various competitors to the hospital – which included the very tough Atsushi Suedo.

It turns out that the young Baki has a secret: he is, in fact, the champion of a secret underground tournament, whose arena was built under the Tokyo Dome Stadium. This tournament features all sorts of fighters of different disciplines in a 'no-holds-barred' competition, all striving to go to the top! Baki had only entered the Shinshinkai Tournament in order to learn karate as fast as he could, mostly because his next opponent happens to be Kosho Shinogi, a.k.a. "The Cord Cutter", a man who can locate vital nerves in the human body – and pull them out and snap them with his bare hands! Is Baki tough enough to survive this next challenge?

An alternate version of Baki's life is presented in the series Baki the Grappler.
