Synopsis
A word of warning – this is NOT a happy film.
The film takes place during the last days of World War II in Japan. Two children, 14 year-old Seita and his 4 year-old sister Setsuko, are orphaned when their mother is killed during the firebombing of the city of Kobe (their father, an Imperial Japanese Navy officer, was killed earlier fighting the Americans in the Pacific). They are taken-in by their aunt, but she proves to be too cruel to them, often giving them little food to eat. Finally leaving her, both siblings face a bleak future as they move into an abandoned bomb shelter.
An additional warning – this film features the consequences of the horrors of war, which includes the aforementioned cruelty and starvation.
