Synopsis

Karin Maaka, at first sight, happens to look like your average teenaged high school girl. She regularly attends school, and eats a bento box (Japanese box lunch) like any other. But Karin as a secret she's trying very hard to keep.

You see, Karin is a vampire! In fact, her entire family are vampires. However, Karin is different from your conventional vampire – she is a day walker, a vampire that walks during the daytime. Moreso, Karin doesn't drink blood... she PRODUCES it! However, this only happens when she's in close proximity to someone experiencing extreme unhappiness. And when she bites someone, she is able to inject the blood she makes, elevating their sadness. But if she does not do so or ends up embarrassed for some reason, Karin often develops nosebleeds due to an excess buildup of blood.

This sort of problem has become a bit of an embarrassment to Karin's family, especially her older brother Ren. Her little sister, Anju, seems to understand Karin's problem better than the rest of the family - and has allowed one of her classmates, Kenta Usui, to retain the secret of her family, knowing that she would eventually not be able to erase the memories of those Karin bites.

A word of note: the manga version of Karin was released in the U.S. by TOKYOPOP under the title "Chibi Vampire".
