Kimagure Orange Road is a romantic comedy series from the late '80s. It consists of 48 TV episodes, 8 OVAs, and 2 films. The last film, Kimagure Orange Road: New Summer's Beginning, was created around 15 years after the end of the original series, and is used to conclude some of the plot points and give another glimpse into the lives of some of the anime's most memorable characters.

A word of note: Kimagure Orange Road is currently out of print, so finding domestic DVDs has become challenging. Also, the domestic DVDs are subtitled only, and no dub has every been made for the series.

Synopsis

Kasuga Kyosuke and his family are not normal. Kyosuke and his two sisters, Manami and Kurumi, are ESPers, meaning they have special powers such as telekinesis, teleportation, and levitation. Most people would find these powers a blessing, but to the Kasuga family they're almost a curse. Kyosuke and his family have had to move to different cities and change schools because of people finding out about their powers.

The series starts off where Kyosuke and his family have just moved to a new city, and Kyosuke is spending his day strolling around town. He finds a long set of stairs and begins to count them when he spots a red straw hat flying through the air. He jumps up and snags it to hear "Nice catch" from the top of the stairs. A cute brunette stands at the top of the steps. She is thankful that she didn't have to run all the way down the 99 steps to retrieve her hat, which intrigues Kyosuke to finish his counting. He counts the last few steps to the top and ends up with a count of 100, which sparks a playful argument between Kyosuke and the girl.

After a few seconds of banter, Kyosuke compromises and says there are 99 and 1/2 steps. The girl laughs and starts to leave, but Kyosuke yells out his name to her and asks if she wants the hat back. She doesn't offer him her name, but tells him the hat looks good on him. He returns home with thoughts of the girl filling his mind, and says "I love this town."

The next day at school, he gets a huge shock when he finds out the girl has a bad reputation at school. She's known as "Madoka the Pick" and apparently skips classes, picks fights with gang members, and smokes. He can't believe his eyes, and he becomes determined to find out which side of Ayukawa Madoka is the real one, the friendly and cute girl from the steps, or the smoking violent girl who skips classes.

To make matters complicated, after a series of unusual events, Kyosuke ends up impressing Hayama Hikaru, Madoka's best friend. The energetic and bubbly Hikaru decides to make Kyosuke her "darling", and ends up creating turmoil in Kyosuke's poor indecisive self.
