Synopsis

This series is set at the Lillian School for Girls. A small Catholic school in Japan, the school follows the souer system, a system that originated in France, where an older student often asks a new student to be a sister (the older student a grand souer and the younger a petite souer). This usually occurs as the two stand near a statue of the Virgin Mary, where the older student offers the younger her rosary.

Yumi Fuzuzawa, a new student at the school, finds herself enraptured by Sachiko Ogasawara, one of the most popular students at the school. For the longest time, the young Yumi for desires the second-year Sachiko to be her grand souer, but feels that it's hopeless. Then one day, out of a whim, Sachiko asks Yumi to take her rosary and become her souer. Yumi then finds herself inside a society in the school known as "The Roses", and finds herself being caught in-between and conflicting within the relationships between some of the students there and their souers.

This series, just like Revolutionary Girl Utena, Noir, Madlax, Murder Princess, El Cazador de la Bruja, and Najica Blitz Tactics, is well known (and often treasured) because of the shoujo-ai (girl-love, a.k.a. lesbian) relationships between the principal characters of the series.
