Early life
Seras Victoria was the daughter of a constable in London, one who often worked undercover. However, it became apparent one night that his cover was blown, and several criminals attacked their house, killing her father and not only doing the same to her mother – but her mother’s body was violated as she laid dead. Out of fury, the young Seras attacked one of the men with a dinner fork, severely injuring him before the young girl was shot and left for dead.
Seras survived that night, but was forever marked by that experience. She had spent the remainder of her young life in orphanages, where she had gotten into many fights with the other children (she had even injured one boy for stealing her doll by throwing a rock at his head). There had been many instances where the operators had to inform Seras that they might not be able to house her if she kept up with the violence.
Becoming a vampire
Following her father's example, Seras had become a constable in England. It is at this point where the two versions of Seras diverge:
TV version
Seras became a member of Division 11, a Special Weapons And Tactics (S.W.A.T.) team within the London Police Authority. Although quite capable of taking care of herself, being the only female member of the teams caused the other members to look after Seras, nick-naming her "Kitten". However, when the team was called-out to a situation within the village of Cheddar, the entire team was attacked by ghouls created by the village vicar, who was a vampire.
Being the only survivor of the attack, Seras had fled the scene, where she encountered Alucard, who had saved her from being attacked by another ghoul. She had fired upon him, only to see him heal from the shot. She then had fled into a church, where she was captured by the vicar vampire. However, before the vicar could kill her, Alucard had interrupted, causing the vicar to deal with him by sending the ghouls he created from the villagers, the village constabulary, and D-11 to kill him. But when that didn't work, and the ghouls ended up destroyed, the vicar tried to bargain with Alucard, using Seras as a human shield. Finding his options limited, the No-Life King informed Seras that he was going to shoot through her to get to the vicar’s heart. He then asked if Seras would like to come with him, which she accepted. Alucard then shot, destroying the vicar vampire – and fatally wounding Seras. Alucard then took the dying Seras into his arms, then saying that 'this is the part where you close your eyes', before drinking her blood and turning her into a vampire.
Manga/OVA version
When the story began, Seras, along with her partners Simon and Eddie, had happened upon the church where the vicar was committing his crimes. Surprised, the vicar sent an army of ghouls after the constables. Finding herself a little out of her league, Seras had fled the church after fighting the ghouls with her partners – who were killed by the vampire.
Racing into a clearing, Seras soon found herself surrounded by ghouls. Once again confronting the vicar, she tries to fight her way out, but is quickly overcome. Not wishing to see such a willful woman as another vampire, the vicar then announced he planned to rape Seras before draining her blood and making her a ghoul – just like he did with Simon and Eddie.
Like in the TV version, Alucard made his appearance, and like before defeated the ghoul army using his Casull. However, when Alucard was faced with shooting through Seras, he asked the girl if she was a virgin first. At first flustered, Seras confirmed that she was – only to get shot through the right lung. After Alucard had finished-off the vicar, he then asked Seras, who was dying from her wounds, if she would join him, which she does.
Powers
Like her master Alucard, Seras has much of the powers of normal vampires, which includes super-fast healing, transformation, increased strength and hypnosis. However (at least the manga/OVA version), she is reluctant to drink blood, which inhibited her potential powers. Like her master, Seras is also vulnerable to sacred charms... particularly Paladin Alexander Anderson’s blessed bayonets.
However, in the manga/OVA version, Seras' powers undergo an explosive magnification after she drinks the blood of the deceased Pip Bernadotte. All of her powers became close to – if not equal – to Alucard, and has also gained the ability to fly (the stump of her left arm, which was severed by Millennium's Zorin Blitz, had formed a black, shadow-like appendage, which she would sport for the remainder of the manga), as shown when she left the devastated Hellsing mansion in order to save Sir Integra Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing from Iscariot's army.
Weapons
Like Alucard, Seras was given weapons to combat hostile vampires. Her first weapon was an automatic machine gun which fired high-calibre 13.7mm bullets. Later, Walter C. Dolnez designed and built another – larger – weapon, the Harkonnen Cannon. Standing close to 2 meters in length and weighing at least 60 kg, the Harkonnen is capable of firing 30mm rounds, ranging from depleted uranium rounds for close-in attack to explosive rounds for long distance targets.
In the manga/OVA, Seras is shown firing another weapon. During the attack by Zorin against the Hellsing mansion, Seras was shown firing two Harkonnen II cannons, weighing a total of 345 kg each and shooting belt-fed 30mm rounds. In addition, the guns double as grenade launchers, firing Vladimir high-explosive rounds.
(a word of note, the two Harkonnen weapons, as well as the Vladimir grenades, are a tribute to Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, the principle antagonist in Frank Herbert's epic science fiction masterpiece 'Dune')
Interactions with other characters
In the TV version of Hellsing, Seras' relationship with Sir Hellsing is merely that of employer/employee. Sir Hellsing even criticizes Seras for starving herself rather than being a valuable part of the Hellsing Organization. In the manga/OVA version however, Sir Hellsing values Seras more, even helping her out by offering her a bit of her blood.
In regards to Alucard, Seras' relationship is somewhat antagonistic. She is even intimidated by her master's harsh attitude. But Alucard still understands his apprentice's difficulty in adjusting to being a vampire. However, he disguises it by chiding her for retaining her human feelings rather than totally embrace her vampiric nature.
In regards to Pip, Seras dismisses the Wild Geese's leader as a greedy pervert. Pip, however, has genuine feelings towards her, and when he was fatally injured by Zorin, asks her to take his blood. This not only increases Seras' powers, but Pip became a familiar of hers, which proved instrumental when she faced off against The Captain of Millennium.
