Synopsis

Tenchi Masaki is a 17 year-old boy growing up in Okayama Prefecture in Japan. He often spends vacations from school with his grandfather Katsuhito at his shrine, learning swordcraft, with school time spent with his widowed architect father Nobuyuki in town. One summer, Tenchi happens to get ahold of the keys to the forbidden cave near the shrine, where he heard stories about an ancient demon, which was imprisoned at the cave 700 years prior by his ancestor Yosho, buried there. He finds to his horror that the old legends were indeed true, and barely gets out when he is pursued by the mummified demon, which had came to life.

However, things get a bit complicated from then on. The demon buried in the cave turns out to be Ryoko Hakubi, a beautiful but feisty space pirate. The little tussle she and Tenchi get into ends up destroying Tenchi's school, which ends up with Ryoko falling in love with him. And if that weren't enough, more beauties come out of space and end up staying with him: Ryoko's rival, Princess Ayeka Misaki Jurai of the planet Jurai, along with her kid sister Sasami Misaki Jurai, Ryoko's carrot-crazy spaceship/cabbit Ryo-Ohki, ditsy Seniwan space policewoman Mihoshi Kuramitsu, Mihoshi's former partner (and Ayeka's adopted aunt) Noike Kamiki Jurai, and Ryoko's mom (actually her creator) Washu Hakubi, the self-proclaimed "Greatest Scientific Genius in the Universe".

At first annoyed by these new visitors, the gentle-mannered Tenchi allows them to stay. But as time goes on, he soon finds out during a crisis involving the "Ruins Buster" Kagato that his grandfather is actually his ancestor Yosho - who was once betrothed to his half-sister Ayeka, but left to avoid a civil war on Jurai because of his Earth-born mother. And if that wasn't amazing enough, Tenchi soon finds out that out that he is the possessor of fantastic powers – possibly making the inoffensive boy the most powerful being in the universe!

This 20-episode OVA series, created by Masaki Kajishima, is the foundation of one of anime's most celebrated and beloved franchises, which includes 6 spin-offs (5 TV and 1 OVA series), as well as three motion pictures in the span of 16 years. These include Tenchi Muyo! GXP, Tenchi Universe, Tenchi in Tokyo, and Tenchi the Movie: Tenchi Muyo! in Love.

(UPDATE) On July 2, 2010, FUNimation Entertainment announced that it has picked-up the license for OVAs 1 and 2 of Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki. [1] The company still has licensing rights to OVA 3.
