Synopsis

The all-female mangaka group CLAMP, who are the group responsible for the series Angelic Layer, Chobits, Miyuki-chan in Wonderland, Cardcaptor Sakura, Tsusaba Chronicle, Code Geass, xxxHOLiC and Magic Knight Rayearth, is also responsible for this two episode OVA, which is the prequel to the apocalyptic series and movie X/1999.

Subaru Sumeragi is the 13th (and last) head of the Sumeragi clan, a family of wizards and exorcists who for over a thousand years protected Japan against supernatural threats. And yet, Subaru simply thinks of himself as an ordinary medium, much to the consternation of his earnest and somewhat excitable twin sister, Hotaru Sumeragi. Their friend, Seishirou Sakurazuka, who works as a veterinarian, often helps out the two, mostly through friendly wisdom and advice. But Subaru and Seishirou have a dark secret they share, and Seishirou – who happens to be more powerful in the mystic arts than Subaru – will figure heavily into Subaru's future... in a very savage and deadly way!

Episode One

Episode one has Subaru trying to figure out a series of mysterious deaths at a construction site. It seems that there is one executive of the building's company, Shinji Nagumo, just happens to be there whenever a catastrophe occurs on the building site – and he ends up the only one unhurt, while others are either injured or killed. As it happens, Subaru was asked by the C.E.O. of T.M.M., the company's contractor, to inquire about the mysterious deaths... only to find out the man, who had a weak heart, died of a heart attack during an elevator mishap - one which Nagumo just happened to be present at!

Subaru also discovers that a young girl, Kazami Azou, is using mystic means to get revenge on Nagumo for the death of her brother, another executive whom Nagumo saw only as an obstacle to his advancement up the corporate ladder. But her inexperience in the mystic arts may only complicate matters, leaving Subaru – and Seishirou – to try to stop Nagumo before he destroys everything when one of Kazami's efforts to kill him backfires, putting her life in danger - and making Nagumo stronger!

Episode Two

Episode two finds Subaru as the witness to a brutal stabbing murder on a subway, for which the killer flees after Subaru uses his powers to try to stop him. During the investigation, Subaru meets Mirei Hideka, a young woman with a unique ability – that of "post-cognition", the power to see into the past by touching objects with her hands. This meeting causes the young mystic great concern, fearing for this tortured girl's safety.

It is soon learned about the killer's motivations – he only thinks of death as a sick game – and he loves to win. But in the middle of the investigation, Subaru, Hotaru and Seishirou find another person, one that Mirei met as a child – Miyataki, who also has post-cognition - and one that might be a factor in Mirei's future.

But soon, the killer strikes again, the victim this time – Mirei's elderly mother, who worked as a subway medium. The federal authority, wishing an end to the killings, goes over the police's heads and asks Mirei to act as bait for the killer, which she eagerly accepts, hoping for revenge for her mother's death. Subaru has to find her – and quickly, before the young Mirei ends up the killer's latest victim!
