Synopsis
Yusuke Urameshi just happens to be your average teenaged punk; always getting into trouble one way or another. He often cuts class, which doesn't please his homeroom representative Keiko Yukimura. At least he can get the best of his rival Kazuma Kuwabara in a fight – which which he always does. However, Yusuke also has a troubled life at home: his mother Atsuko is often home drunk, if not going to parties, so he's often absent from their apartment.
But Yusuke also has a soft side: he likes kids, and will often find any excuse possible to make one laugh – and that is what causes the biggest change in his life. After one such encounter with a kid, he finds the little boy had wandered into the street at the same time a car is careening out-of-control towards him. To this end, Yusuke dashes out and rescues the boy... only to get fatally injured in the process!
Turns out dying proved to be the biggest change in Yusuke's life!
For one, he encounters the pretty spirit of death Botan, who informs Yusuke that his death was premature and they must find a way to get him back. Although he thought everyone would be better-off with him dead, Yusuke soon changes his mind when he discovers some to the people he thought had taken him for granted or lost – which included the principal of his school, his mother Atsuko, Keiko... and even Kuwabara – all grieved for his passing! It was even discovered that his body was not dead to begin with. It took a lot of trouble... but somehow Yusuke was brought back to the realm of the living.
But just as he found he was alive again, Yusuke soon finds out that he now has powerful spiritual abilities... and as a result becomes the spirit world's earthbound spirit detective, by decree of that realm's prince Koenma... and aided by Botan, who has taken human form to do so. And as a result, Yusuke gets drawn into a world of danger he didn't expect – or even wanted! And there's still the hidden secret of his own legacy that he has yet to discover!
